No. 7 Newberry tames D-I No. 22 North Carolina State, 28-13

The scarlet and gay won the final five matches to upend the Wolfpack

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The seventh ranked Division II team, Newberry College defeated its second 
Division I opponent of the season with a 28-13 victory over the 22nd ranked North Carolina State 
University. The scarlet and gray won the final five matches to overcome a 13-4 
deficit that the Wolfpack cumulated after the first five matches.

Sophomore Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) lost his first match of the season as he fell to NC State’s 
Taylor Cummings by a 5-3 decision. Cummings’ five points were the first points scored on Oliver 
since November 8th. 

The closest match of the dual was at 133 lbs. between Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.) and the 
Wolfpack’s Darrius Little. Oliver and Little battled into the third overtime period, where Little 
scored a takedown for the 5-3 sudden victory.

Newberry won its first match of the dual when Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) defeated Ryan Tice 
by an 11-1 major decision. Washington, the fifth nationally ranked wrestler at 141 lbs., improved 
his record to 4-2 on the season.

The Wolfpack increased its lead to 10-4, when the fourth ranked wrestler at D-I, Darrion Caldwell, 
claimed a 13-1 major decision over Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.). Collick’s record fell to 5-2 on the 
season with his only losses on the season coming to D-I opponents.

The scarlet and gray faced their second straight ranked opponent, when Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) 
clashed with the 22nd nationally ranked Kody Hamrah. Hamrah claimed NC State’s fourth and final victory 
of the night with a 9-2 decision over Byrnes.

In the 165 pound match, Vin Salek (Toms River, N.J.) extended his winning streak to seven as he 
defeated the Wolfpack’s Quinton Godley with an 11-6 decision. Salek’s victory closed the gap between 
the teams to 13-7 with NC State holding the six point advantage.

Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) tied the match at 13-13, when he pinned Seth Parlier at the 5:30 mark. 
Kelly’s second period fall gave him his ninth victory of the season. The scarlet and gray took their 
first lead of the match, when Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) won by 
forfeit as NC State failed to field a wrestler at 184 lbs.

Clinching onto its six point lead, Newberry won the next match to secure the victory over NC State as 
Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored a 3-2 decision Mark Jahad. Griffin’s sixth win of the season 
gave Newberry its second win over a D-I opponent this year.

In the day’s final match, Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) recorded a second period fall over 
Robert Isola at the 4:25 mark. Wainwright’s pin extended his winning streak to nine, which dates back 
to last season’s NCAA Tournament.

Newberry’s next dual will be on Dec. 17 against the University of Indianapolis at 9 a.m. Eleazer Arena. 
The match will be apart of the second annual Newberry Duals, which hosts ten of the best squads from 
across the country.

Home Opener for No. 7 Newberry results in 45-0 shutout of Seton Hill

The scarlet and gray recorded pins in five matches

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The seventh nationally ranked Newberry College wrestling team shutout its season 
home opening opponent, Seton Hill University, with a 45-0 victory. The scarlet and gray’s dominating 
performance included five pins and five decisions, which sealed Newberry’s fifth win of the season.

Newberry started the dual with the first ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.), 
who scored a 7-0 decision over Seton Hill’s Josh Testa. Oliver has shutout his last four opponents and 
outscored them by a 32-0 advantage.

Aldon Isenberg (Gardner, Kan.) scored his second pin of the season as he scored a first period fall 
over Seton Hill’s Nick Nichols at the 1:07 mark. Isenberg improved his season record to 3-1.

The third ranked wrestler in the East Region at 141 pounds, Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) scored 
a 11-6 decision over the Griffins’ Dallas Evans to acquire his third win of the season.

At 149 pounds, Latra Collick accomplished a second period fall as he pinned Kurt McCamley at the 3:26 
mark. Collick secured his 45th career victory as he improved his season record to 5-1.

The 157 pound match featured Newberry’s Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) and Seton Hill’s Josh Voelker. 
Byrnes recorded his second consecutive fall as he pinned Voelker at the 3:10 mark.

Vin Salek (Toms River, N.J.) scored his sixth consecutive victory and his fifth pin in his last six 
matches as he pinned Quade Miler at the 1:15 mark in the 165 pound match. Salek, who won last week’s 
Braves Open, sealed the victory for the scarlet and gray as his pin gave Newberry an insurmountable 
30-0 lead.

Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) came off his second place performance at the Braves Open with a 13-6 
decision over Seton Hill’s Dan Matthews. Kelly, who improved his record to 8-2, leads Newberry in total 
victories.

Wrestling at 184 lbs., Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) was able to hold on for a 2-1 decision over 
the Griffins' Nick Padezan. Blanton’s two-point reversal in the third period secured the victory and 
gave him his third win of the season.

Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) improved to 5-0 on the season with his 11-5 decision over Seton Hill’s 
Ron Oswald. Griffin’s victory extended Newberry’s lead to 39-0.

The final match of the day was Cy Wainwright’s (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) pin of Stephen Zubach at the 
2:27 mark. Wainwright extended his winning streak to eight with the victory.

The scarlet and gray will try to win their second match over a D-I opponent this season, when they 
face off against the 22nd ranked Division I, North Carolina State University, at 2 p.m. in Eleazer Arena.

Scarlet and gray claim first shutout of the season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Newberry College wrestling team got their first shutout of the season 
as it claimed a 49-0 victory over the 19th ranked NJCAA Spartanburg Methodist College. The last 
shutout for the scarlet and gray came last season with a 37-0 victory over the 13th ranked 
Gannon University on January 12.

Spartanburg was unable to field wrestlers in four weight classes resulting in four forfeit 
victories for Newberry. Even with the forfeits, the scarlet and gray racked up 25 points in 
six matches.

Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) started off the dual for Newberry at 125 pounds wrestling against 
SMC’s Kyle Long. Oliver recorded a 4-0 decision over Long by securing two takedowns.

Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.) won by forfeit at 133 pounds giving Newberry a 9-0 lead.

Wrestling for the first time this year, Kamron Johnston (Bossier City, La.) garnered four points 
for Newberry as he won by major decision, 14-2, over SMC’s Michael Mew. Johnston secured the 
major decision by scoring seven points in the third period.

Competing at 149 pounds, Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) scored a 5-1 decision over Carlos Morales 
by scoring a reversal in the second period and then a takedown in the final period to secure 
the match. 

The 157 pound match was the quickest of the night as Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) pinned 
Spartanburg’s Tyler McElhaney at the 2:56 mark, which gave the scarlet and gray a 26-0 advantage.

Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) had one of two major decisions for Newberry as he defeated SMC’s 
Drew McElrath 20-7. Kelly recorded nine takedowns in the match as he overwhelmed McElrath 
throughout three periods.

At 174, 184 and 197 pounds, Newberry won due to forfeit since Spartanburg was unable to field 
wrestlers at that weight class.

The final match of the night was also the most lopsided as Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) 
recorded a 20-4 technical fall over SMC’s Sutherland Buford. Wainwright scored his second technical 
fall of the season as he tallied five takedowns and three near falls before the match was stopped 
midway through the second period.

The next dual for the scarlet and gray will come during the Thanksgiving Holidays as they face off 
against Division I power North Carolina State University and Division II East Region opponent 
Seton Hill University starting at 11 a.m. on November 29.

No. 7 Newberry marches over No. 15 Limestone Saints, 29-15

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Newberry College wrestling team secured a sweep at the Limestone College 
Tri-Meet as the scarlet and gray defeated the Saints' 29-15 by winning seven of ten matches. 
Newberry's two major decisions set the tone to begin the match and the scarlet and 
gray ended with two pins to add an exclamation point to the victory over the nation's fifteenth ranked team.

Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) secured his second major decision shutout of the tri-meet by 
defeating Limestone's Matt Hall, 11-0. Oliver, who is ranked 7th nationally at 125 lbs., scored 
seven points in the third period to give Newberry four points to begin the dual. 

Making his third career collegiate start, Aldon Isenberg (Gardner, Kan.) gave Newberry four more 
points as he recorded a 14-4 major decision over John Harper. Isenberg's ten points in the final 
period overwhelmed Harper and gave Isenberg his second win of the season.

Limestone's Jeremy Parker scored six points for the Saints' as he recorded a injury default, when 
Newberry's Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) was injured at the three minute mark.

Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) increased Newberry's lead to 11-6, when he scored an 8-3 decision over 
the Saints' Dustin Baynes. Collick, the third ranked 149 lbs. wrestler in the East Region, scored 
three takedowns in the match giving him his third win of the season.

Freshman Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) won his second match of the tri-meet with a 3-0 shutout decision 
over Limestone's Bryce Sopko. Byrnes scored three points in the third period off a reversal and for 
recording over a minute in riding time.

Wrestling at 165 pounds, Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) gave Newberry its fifth win of the dual as 
he defeated Casey Bradley by a slim 6-5 decision. Kelly secured the victory, when he was awarded 
one point for having over a minute of riding time.

Limestone garnered their second win of the dual when Limestone's Joeseph Shreckhise defeated 
Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) 5-3.

The top nationally ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, Daniel Scanlan won his match with a pin over 
Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) at the five minute mark. The fall minimized Newberry's lead to 
17-15 with two matches remaining.

However, Newberry's duo of returning All-Americans Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Cy Wainwright 
both recorded pins to give the scarlet and gray the 29-15 victory. Griffin pinned Limestone's 
Josh Mummert at the 4:34 mark, while Wainwright's pinned Allen Runyon at 
the 4:55 mark.

This was Newberry's second victory over a nationally ranked Division II opponent this season. Newberry 
will face Spartanburg Methodist in their next match on November 18 at 7 p.m. in Spartanburg.

Newberry wrestlers defeat two nationally ranked Lakers' grapplers

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Competing for the first time in the Palmetto State, the Newberry College wrestling team, 
who is ranked seventh nationally, dominated a fellow top-15 ranked team, the no. 13 ranked 
Mercyhurst College, 30-6. The scarlet and gray overwhelmed the Lakers' by winning 
eight of ten matches with two major decisions and two technical falls.

Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) started the match off with a 10-0 major decision over Payne Lint. 
Oliver, who is ranked seventh nationally at 125 lbs., scored two takedowns in the match to go along 
with a three-point near fall to secure his third victory of the season and 
give Newberry the early 4-0 lead.

Wrestling at 133 pounds, returning All-American Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.) made his season debut 
for Newberry, but was defeated by Mercyhurst's Michael Baxter by a 11-6 decision. The seventh ranked 
Young, had an early 6-2 lead over Baxter, but was unable to hold on for 
the victory.

Newberry scored it's first technical fall of the dual, when no. five nationally ranked Tony Washington 
(Georgetown, S.C.) scored a 17-2 technical fall over Lance Pitcel at the seven minute mark. Washington 
secured the technical fall when he was awarded a point for over a 
minute of riding time.

Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) extended the scarlet and gray's lead to 12-3, when he scored a 5-2 decision 
over the Lakers' Lenny Calhoun. Collick, the third ranked 149 pound wrestler in the East Region, was 
tied at 2-2 in the third period until he scored three straight to 
defeat Calhoun.

Freshman Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) won Newberry's third straight match of the dual, when he scored 
a 7-2 decision over the fourth nationally ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, Andy Lamancusa. Byrnes never 
trailed in the match as he scored five points in the first period with 
a takedown and a two-point near fall.

The scarlet and gray's second defeat of the dual came when Vin Salek (Toms River, N.J.) fell to 
Mercyhurst's Kevin Hardy by a 5-2 decision. Hardy scored three points in the third period to give the 
Lakers' their last win of the dual.

Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) defeated the Lakers' Kyle Raber by a 6-4 decision at 174 pounds. 
Blanton, the no. eight nationally ranked wrestler at his weight, took an early 4-0 lead by getting 
two takedowns.

Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) secured the victory for the scarlet and gray in the 184 pound match with 
a 10-4 decision over Patrick Carter. Elkins had four takedowns in the match giving him his second 
win of the season.

Returning All-American Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) recorded Newberry's second major decision of 
the dual with a 10-2 performance over the no. seven nationally ranked Trevor Gallo. Griffin went into 
the third period with only a 2-0 lead, but recorded eight points in 
the final period with three takedowns.

Fellow All-American Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) had an impressive showing over Nathan Sharp 
with a 20-5 technical fall at the 5:35 minute mark. Wainwright recorded eight takedowns in the match 
as well as a three-point near fall to give him his third win of the season.

Newberry's 30-6 victory over Mercyhurst was its first victory over an East Region opponent this year. 
The scarlet and gray will face off against twelve East Region opponents this year. This was Newberry's 
first dual match of the day and faced the host school, Limestone College, 
later in the day.

LIMESTONE DROPS TO MERCYHURST AND NEWBERRY IN SEASON OPENER

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The #15 ranked Limestone wrestling team opened the season on Saturday against #13 ranked 
Mercyhurst College and #7 ranked Newberry College. The Saints fell to Mercyhurst by a score of 17-24, 
and to Newberry 15-29. 

Limestone fell behind early to Mercyhurst, losing in the 125-pound and 133-pound divisions. Jeremy Parker 
(Winchester, Va.) was able to put Limestone on the board when he pinned (2:59) Lance Pitcel (Casco, Mich) 
in the 141-pound division. However, it was one of only four decisions 
for Limestone. Joby Shreckhise (Grottoes, Va.) beat Kyle Raber (Wooster, Ohio) in the 174-pound division 
11-3, while Dan Scanlon (Leesburg, Va.) beat Bryan Wolff 
(Avon Lake, Ohio) 13-3. Trey Moss turned in the final Saints win, beating Nathan Sharp (Beloit, Ohio) 7-5.

For the Saints, it would be much of the same against Newberry, dropping the 125-pound and 133-pound divisions.  
However, Parker would defeat Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.), ranked fifth nationally in the 141-pound 
division, by injury default. Shreckhise also recorded a big win 
beating Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.), ranked first in the region, 5-3 in the 174-pound division.  
Scanlon continued his strong start of the season with a win over 
Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.), pinning him at 4:59.

Limestone will return to the mat on November 22, when they travel to Pembroke, N.C. to participate 
in the Braves Classic.

11/14/2008 - Anderson University Wrestling Team Dominates St. Andrews
LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Anderson University recorded three technical falls, three major decisions and two 
falls on its way to a 41-3 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian in a dual meet Friday night. 

Leading 8-3 after the first three bouts, Anderson recorded technical falls in three of the next four 
bouts to extend its lead to 26-3. 

The Trojans closed out the rout by recording falls in the final two bouts. 

Anderson, 1-0 overall, plays host to Gardner-Webb Wednesday night.

Nash Takes Third Place Honors At Wolfpack Open
Stancil Makes Semifinal Appearance For UNCP As Well

RALEIGH – Senior Mike Nash rebounded from a tough semifinal loss with two-straight victories in the 
consolation bracket, including a 5-3 decision over North Carolina’s Jason Deluca, to finish in third place 
and highlight wrestling action for UNCP at the N.C. State-hosted 
Wolfpack Open on Saturday afternoon.

Nash, a Richmond, Va., native, posted victories over No. 4 Ohio State’s Pat Harrington and Scott Norris 
from N.C. State, but fell to ninth-ranked Reece Humphrey in the semifinals. He would respond with a 6-4 win 
over UNC’s Ky Corley, before ousting Deluca in the 
consolation finals.  All-American J.J. Davis (from Byrnes H.s in S.C.), who competed as an unattached participant, 
won his opening match of the day over Chattanooga’s Josh Condon, 
before suffering a second period pin to 20th-ranked Keegan Mueller from North Carolina. Davis would oust 
teammate Derving Rios in his first consolation match, but his day was 
cut short with a late-match fall to Duke’s Addison Nuding.  Senior Erik Stancil advanced through to the 
semifinals of the 285-pound bracket, before being ousted from the tournament 
with a major decision setback to No. 4 Ohio State’s Corey Morrison, as well as a medical forfeit to ninth-ranked 
Justin Dobies of North Carolina.  Freshman Daniel Pipkin, 
who also wrestled as an unattached participant, won the first two matches of his UNCP career in the 125-pound 
bracket before dropping a tough 9-4 decision to N.C. State’s Michael 
Moreno in the championship quarterfinals, as well as his first consolation match-up with Schuyler Swanton of 
the Virginia Tech Hokie Wrestling Club. Newcomer Mike Williams 
had a good showing as well, prevailing in his first two matches of the 157-pound bracket, before falling to 
15th-ranked Jason Johnstone of the nationally ranked Buckeyes & 
North Carolina’s Thomas Ferguson. 



Bulldogs Capture 28-6 Victory in Season-Opener

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel grapplers took home their first team victory of the 2008-09 season. 
The Citadel wrestling team tallied an impressive 28-6 victory over the Crusaders from Belmont Abbey.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 15-0 lead as J.C. Oddo, Kelby Smith, Odie Delaney and Aaron Brown each 
came away victorious against the Crusaders. Brown won by fall in 2:05 in the first round against Belmont Abbey’s 
Alex Dinelli in his first victory of the 2008-09 season. 
Decision wins by Oddo, Smith, and Delaney earned three points each, adding to the Bulldog’s team score.  
“For a young team, in the first meet of the year, our guys wrestled really 
well tonight,” stated head coach Rob Hjerling. “The guys showed great effort and tonight’s match-ups gave 
us some good opportunities to see what we did well on as well as 
the areas where we need to work, technique wise.”

RALEIGH, N.C. - While the Newberry College wrestling team starters were competing in the University of 
Tennessee-Chattanooga Tri-Meet, the scarlet and gray reserves and planned redshirts traveled to the campus 
of North Carolina State University to compete in the N.C. State Open 
on Saturday, November 8. The top performances came from Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.), who finished fourth at 
141 pounds and Dale Debacco Jr. (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) who went 3-2 
wrestling in the 174 lbs. division.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Newberry College wrestling team fell to Division I opponent University of 
Tennessee-Chattanooga, 24-16, in the second match of the UTC Tri-Meet. The scarlet and gray won four of 
the ten matches against the host team, who boast two nationally ranked wrestlers.

Sophomore Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) led off Newberry in the match by defeating Paul Garza (Tucson, Ariz.) 
with an 8-4 decision. Oliver went 2-0 at the tri-meet at 125 pounds by defeating Garza and Davidson College's 
Ben Altman (Wilmington, Del.) with a fall at the 2:37 mark.

Aldon Isenberg (Gardner, Kan.) fell in the second match of the night to Steve Hromada (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) 
in the 133 pounds matchup. Hromada defeated Isenberg by a 13-7 decision.

Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) was pitted against No. 3 ranked Cody Cleveland (Tullahoma, Tenn.). 
Cleveland won by decision by a slim margin of 3-2 in the 141 pounds match.

Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) lost in a close match to Kelly Felix (Cleveland, Tenn.), who recorded a 
5-4 victory over Byrnes due to his 1:17 advantage on riding time in the 149 pound match.

Junior Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) lost by a fall to Joey Knox (Dublin, Ga.) at the 1:45 mark. 
Collick wrestled up at 157 pounds for the second time in the tri-meet.

Wrestling against the nineteenth-ranked Seth Garvin (Hoover, Ala.), Vin Salek (Toms River, N.J.) 
held a 3-0 advantage over his nationally ranked D-I opponent. However, Salek allowed Garvin to score 
nine points in the third period to secure a 9-6 victory. Like Collick, 
Salek wrested up a weight class by competing at 165 pounds after he weighed in at 157 pounds. 

Junior Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) lost to Jason McCroskey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) by a fall in 
second period at the 4:04 mark. Kelly was tied with McCroskey at 0-0, when the pin occurred. Kelly also 
competed at a higher weight class despite weighing in at 165 pounds.

Sophomore Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) won by fall over Tyler Roberson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in the 
third period at the 6:39 mark. Tied at 3-3 in the third period, Elkins secured points in succession by 
escaping from Roberson, then recording a takedown and recording a 
pin on Roberson. Elkins went undefeated at the UTC Tri-Meet.

Returning All-American Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) recorded a victory over Ethan Winel 
(Brookfield, Ill.) with a 9-6 decision. Griffin went undefeated at the UTC Tri-Meet, going 2-0 and 
defeating two D-I opponents.

In the final match of the night, returning All-American Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) 
recorded the largest point differential of the match by defeating Matt Lettner (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) 
by a 20-7 major decision. Wainwright also went undefeated at the UTC Tri-Meet 
by pinning Davidson's Charlie Wolff (Rochester, Minn.) at the 1:35 mark.

The scarlet and gray went 1-1 at the UTC Tri-Meet; Newberry defeated Davidson 39-4 earlier in the day. 
Newberry had four wrestlers go undefeated against D-I opponents as Elkins, Griffin, Oliver and Wainwright 
all left Chattanooga without a blemish to their season records.

Newberry will travel to nearby Gaffney, S.C., for the Limestone College Tri-Meet on November 15th. 
The scarlet and gray will battle against two nationally ranked Division II opponents; 13th ranked 
Mercyhurst College and 15th ranked Limestone College. Newberry will face off 
against Limestone at 1 p.m. followed by Mercyhurst at 3 p.m.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Newberry College wrestling team kicked off the 2008-09 campaign with an overwhelming 
39-4 victory over Division I opponent, Davidson College. The scarlet and gray put in a dominant performance 
against the Wildcats by winning nine of the ten matches.


Sophomore Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) jumpstarted the match for Newberry as he wrestled at 125 lbs. and 
defeated Davidson's Ben Altman (Wilmington, Del.) with a fall at the 2:37 mark. It was the eighth career 
win for Oliver over Division I opponents.


Aldon Isenberg (Gardner, Kan.) made his collegiate debut in style as he defeated Alex Radsky (Worthington, Ohio) 
with a fall at the 6:18 mark. Isenberg, who wrestled at 133 lbs., came to Newberry with over 2,000 career 
wins in his career.


Newberry continued to add onto their lead as senior Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) recorded a major 
decision victory over Vitaly Radsky (Worthington, Ohio) by winning 10-2 at 141 lbs.


Also making his collegiate debut was Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.), who defeated Davidson's Carl Sandercock 
(Quincy, Ill.) with a 9-2 decision.


Junior Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) recorded Newberry's second major decision of the match as he defeated 
the Wildcats' Joe McGinely (Doylestown, Pa.), with a resounding 10-1 advantage. Collick, who weighed in at 
141 lbs., wrestled up a weight class to compete against McGinely.


Vin Salek (Toms River, N.J.) was the final wrestler to make his collegiate debut as he recorded a 9-7 
sudden overtime victory over Tyler Mullen (Westminster, Md.). Salek wrestling at 165 lbs. also competed up 
a weight class after he weighed in at 157 lbs.


Junior Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) competed at 174 lbs. and recorded a 6-1 victory over Kevin Cook 
(Phoenix, N.Y.). Kelly also competed at a higher weight class despite weighing in at 165 lbs.


The only loss for Newberry against the D-I school was Josh Whitelock's (Rhodesdale, Md.) loss by major 
decision, 10-2, to Davidson's Sam O'Hair (Alexandria, Va.).


The largest point differential in the meet was All-American Keeno Griffin's 17-5 major decision over 
Jorge Estrada (Carrollton, Texas). Griffin, who competed last year at 184 lbs., wrestled at 197 lbs 
against the Wildcats.


Fellow All-American Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) recorded Newberry's quickest fall of the match, 
when he pinned Davidson's Charlie Wolff (Rochester, Minn.) at the 1:35 mark.


The scarlet and gray will face off against the host off the UTC Tri-Meet at 7:30 p.m. Last year, 
Tennessee-Chattanooga defeated Newberry 27-13 at the UTC Tri-Meet.

Bulldogs Host Another Successful Citadel Open Charleston, S.C. – The Bulldogs hosted another 
successful Citadel Open Tournament as 150 competitors took part in the wrestling action today 
in McAlister Field House. Sophomores and freshmen from all over traveled to the 
lowcountry to gain valuable experience. Bulldog heavyweight Ivan Muller was 3-2 in the tournament. 
Muller’s teammate 165 pounder Casey Underwood also had a 3-2 record. Other 
Bulldogs to finish with a 3-2 record on the day were 184-pound Brian Hurley and Alex Croasmun in the
 157 weight class. “I’m very pleased with today’s results and effort,” 
head coach Rob Hjerling stated. “Today and yesterday’s matches were two great days to see where we 
need to improve. We have come a long way since preseason but still have a ways to go.” 
141-pound unattached wrestler David Ivanschenko took home first place with a 4-0 record on the day. 
Ivanschenko had one fall, two decisions and finished out his day with a 
major decision over Darton College’s Nathan Allen. Also taking the championship, while competing 
unattached was 165-pound Keith Koziel, finishing 4- 0 with two falls and two decisions 
on the day. Unattached grappler Odie Delaney took home the gold in the 197 weight class with a 4-0 record. 
Delany won by fall in the semi-finals followed by another fall 
over Limestone’s Josh Mummert in the championship in 4:21. Another grappler to come away with the gold 
was unattached 174 pounder J.C. Oddo finishing strong with back to back 
falls in the semi-finals and finals over Central Florida’s CJ Hauser and Devon Jackson respectively. 
Also placing in the tournament was 125-pound unattached wrestler Richard 
Alarcon finishing third with a 7-1 record. After a 6-5 decision victory and a 5-1 loss to Limestone’s 
Matt Hall, Alarcon fought back and reeled off four straight pins and two 
decisions to capture the bronze. Finishing third in the 174-pound weight class was unattached 
Derek Sickel with a fall in 2:41 to secure his medal finishing with a 3-1 record. 
157-pound unattached redshirt freshman Justin Sparrow had two pins and one decision on the day 
before dropping an 8-6 decision to Duke’s Jared Sernoffsky, placing him second overall. 
Also placing second was 184- pound unattached Kelby Smith finishing with a 3-1 record in the tournament. 
The Bulldogs will be back in action as they host the Liberty Flames 
in McAlister Field House Nov. 15. The match will begin at 11 a.m. before the homecoming football game.
