ANDREWS 40-5 LAURINBURG, N.C.— The No. 17-ranked Limestone College wrestling team picked up a 40-5 win against St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Tuesday night. The Saints won 9 out of 10 matches for the victory. Limestone improved to 2-0 on the season as the Knights open the dual match portion of their schedule 0-1. Junior Ian Barker put the Saints on top for the whole match with a first-period pin fall at lightweight ranks for six points. Barker pinned Knights freshman Eric Brown (Norfolk, Va.) just 2:45 into the contest. Limestone increased its lead to 15-0 with three decisions by a trio of Saints juniors in the next three battles. Brent Clausing (Miamisburg, Ohio) edged freshman Casey Gashaw (Laurinburg, N.C.) 5-2 at 133-pounds; Joe Federspiel (Greenville, S.C.) squeaked past freshman Alejandro Soto-Perez (Laurinburg, N.C.) at 141-lbs with riding time, 7-6; and Dustin Baynes (Liberty Twp., Ohio) added a 5-3 decision against freshman Greg Todd (Gloucester, Va.) in the 149-pound ranks. Sophomore Mikel Bush (Lakewood, N.Y.) picked up a forfeit victory at 157, giving the visitors a 21-0 lead at the midway intermission. Limestone continued its shutout bid at 165, as freshman Casey Bradley (Muncie, Ind.) took the mat for a 13-1 major decision over freshman Rickey Flood (Martinsville, Va.). Fulmer eventually put the Knights on the scoreboard in the seventh match of the evening. Fulmer rolled to a 17-2 technical fall of freshman Logan Raabe (Sumter, S.C.) in the 174-pound division. Fulmer had four near falls and two takedowns en route to his second win of the season. Limestone got those five points back in the next battle at 184 as sophomore Dan Scanlan (Leesburg, Va.) tallied a 16-1 technical fall over freshman Will Hess (Lexington, N.C.). Senior Dave Bush (Lakewood, N.Y.) followed at 197 with a 13-2 major decision over senior Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.). The Saints finished the dual match the same way they started it with another pin fall. Junior Trey Moss (Red Bank, S.C.) pinned freshman Andre Ellerbe (Laurinburg, N.C.) at the 1:59 mark to give the visitors the 35-point victory. Eight wrestlers placed in the top four for Newberry in the tournament. Along with the three tournament champions, Newberry had two second place finishers, two third place finishers and one fourth place finisher. Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) defeated Rashard Goff from Cleveland State University to win his second straight tournament championship. Goff is the No. 17 wrestler in Division I at 285 lbs. The redshirt junior went 5-0 on the day, including two wins by pinfall. Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) went 4-0 to win the tournament championship at 174 lbs. in his first action of the 2007/08 season. In the tournament semifinals Blanton defeated Anthony Sayles from Gannon, the No. 3 wrestler in the East Region. Blanton defeated Division I wrestler Gered Tolson, from Cleveland State University, 3-1 in sudden victory to claim the title. After ending regulation time tied at one, Blanton scored a takedown on Tolson for the win. Anundson's (Sparks, Nev.) Harris Open championship was the first ever college tournament title in the redshirt senior's career. Anundson went 4-0 on the day, including two pinfall victories to claim the title. In his second match of the day Anundson pinned Dan Mehling from the No. 15 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in 4:17. Sophomore Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) also made it to the Championship round for the Indians. Griffin defeated No. 7 Pino Scavella from Gannon, 7-5, to reach the semifinals. In the finals Griffin fell to Justin Kilgore, from Kent State, 6-3. Oliver advanced to the championship round for a second week in a row. After winning the Pembroke Classic last weekend, he finished second this week, falling to Brandon Davis from Ashland. The freshman went 4-1 on the day, including a win over Bo Tauris, from Ohio State, in the semifinals. Along with the five Indians in the Championship match, sophomore Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) and freshmen Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) and Kyle Packer (Marlton, N.J.) all advanced to the third place match. Collick went 4-1 in his first appearance of the 2007/08 season. In his best match of the day, Collick gained a tech fall over James Forseyth of Brockport, 21-4 in 5:26. Elkins went 2-0, before facing eventual tournament champion Justin Kilgore in the semifinals. The freshman recovered from the loss to score a solid win over James Flaherty from Brockport, for third place. Packer placed fourth, going 3-2 on the day. In the second round Packer recorded a 0:45 pin over Adam Green from Gannon. The pin was the sixth fastest in Newberry team history. The No. 13 ranked Indians return to the Mat next Saturday when they will attend the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Tri-Meet. Newberry will face UTC as well as Campbellsville University. Jones Center. The tournament was hosted by UNC-Pembroke. Several Limestone wrestlers had solid performances to place in the top 5 in their weight classes. Joby Schreckhise (Grottoes, Va.) and Dan Scanlan (Leesburg, Va.) were third in the 174-pound and 184-pound weight classes, respectively. Heavyweight Trey Moss (Red Bank, S.C.) finished third. Brent Clausing (Miamisburg, Ohio/133 lbs.), Casey Bradley (Muncie, Ind./165 lbs.), and Kyle Elliott (Valdese, N.C.) finished 5th in their respective weight classes. The Saints faced some tough competition as they competed against some of the best NCAA Division II teams in the region and several NCAA Division I schools. Matt Hall (Hamptonville, N.C.) recorded two wins before being eliminated in the 125-pound weight class. John Harper (Walhalla, S.C.) also recorded a win in the same division. In the 133-pound weight class, Pat Seidel (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) got three wins. Brent Clausing (Miamisburg, Ohio) defeated Seidel in the wrestleback and advanced to take fifth place. Nathan Carmack (Miamisburg, Ohio) picked up two wins before losing in the consolation round of the 141-pound weight class. Joey Federspiel (Greenville, S.C.) took three wins and Jeremy Parker (Winchester, Va.) won once. Dusty Leutz (Naples, Fla.) and Dustin Baynes (Liberty Twp., Ohio) each picked up a win in the opening rounds of the 149-pound category before appearing in the consolation round, where Baynes knocked Leutz out of the competition with a 6-4 decision. Baynes got two more victories before he was defeated by Dennis Fix (UNC-Pembroke). Jeremy McPhearson (Lancaster, S.C.) had three wins in the consolation round. In the 157-pound class, Bryce Sopko (Brighton, Mich.) had two wins before losing a close 3-2 decision to Peter Rose of Southern Virginia. Mikel Bush (Lakewood, N.Y.) won his first match, but lost the second. In the wrestleback, he stayed alive with a win against UNC-Pembroke's Trey Kirkland, and then suffered a loss to Rashaad Saunders (UNC-Pembroke). Casey Bradley (Muncie, Ind.) had two wins to start the day in the 165-pound weight class, but lost to J.J. Davis of UNC-Pembroke, 6-0. He had two wins in the consolation round to take fifth. Joby Schreckhise (Grottoes, Va.) was on a roll with two wins, but lost to Davidson's Trevor Clavette, 13-2 in the 174-pound weight class. He defeated VMI's Dustin McCabe to finish third. In the 184-pound category, Dan Scanlan (Leesburg, Va.) had four victories before dropping a match to John Barone of Duke University, 6-1. He won his lone wrestleback match to take third. Donnie Gallup (Buford, Ga.) had a win in the 197-pound class. He went on to lose to David Bush (Lakewood, N.Y.) in the wrestleback, 13-2. Bush lost in the next round to The Citadel's Jon Buck, 7-4. Heavyweights Trey Moss (Red Bank, S.C.) and Kyle Elliott (Valdese, N.C.) battled in the consolation to see which wrestler would advance to compete for third place in their weight class. Moss got a narrow 6-4 win and lost to Duke's Wade Van Sickle to take fourth. Elliott defeated Carson-Newman's Arthur Brown to finish fifth. Participating teams at the 2007 Braves Classic included Campbell, Spartanburg Methodist, Davidson, VMI, Limestone, The Apprentice School, The Citadel, Carson-Newman, Cumberland University, Gardner-Webb, Anderson University, UNC, N.C. State, UNC-Greensboro, Southern Virginia, Belmont-Abbey, Cumberland College, Old Dominion, Newberry, Kings, and UNC-Pembroke. ---------------------------- Eight Wrestlers place at Pembroke Classic as Wrestling opens 2007/08 season The Indians claimed three tournament championships on the day 11/10/2007 PEMBROKE, N.C. - Matt Oliver, Brandon Kelly and Cy Wainwright all won tournament championships as the Newberry Wrestling team opened its 2007/08 season with a strong showing at the Pembroke Classic. The Indians had eight wrestlers place in the event. In the first intercollegiate action of his career, Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) went 5-0 to win the 125 lbs. championship. Oliver entered the event as the No. 4 seed and defeated No. 5 seed C.J. Hamilton, from Marion Military Institute, and No. 1 seed Ben Altman, from Davidson, to advance to the finals, where he faced No. 2 seed Denny Herndon from Gardner-Webb. Oliver took an early 2-0 lead with a takedown and went on to control much of the match, winning 6-2. In the 141 lbs. weight class freshman Kyle Packer (Marlton, N.J.) wrestled his way to the finals before falling to the No. 1 seed Tyler Anthony, from VMI, 2-5. Packer placed second after a 5-1 day, which included two pinfall victories as well as wins over the No. 2 and No. 3 seeded wrestlers in the tournament. Newberry had three wrestlers place in the 165 lbs. weight class as Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) won the championship, Alonso Azumendi (Wellford, S.C.) finished fourth and Josh Whitelock (Rhodesdale, Md.) finished sixth. Kelly, who was seeded fifth, went 5-0 on the day including wins over No. 1 seed Azumendi in the semifinals and No. 2 seed Addison Nuding, from Duke, in the finals. Azumendi recovered from his loss to Kelly, defeating Casey Bradley from Limestone, before forfeiting to No. 3 seed JJ. Davis from UNC Pembroke in the third place match. Whitelock recovered from a first round loss to place sixth in the event. He won six straight matches in the wrestleback bracket before falling, 6-1, to J.J. Davis. Whitelock forfeited the fifth place match against Casey Bradley to finish sixth. At 184 pounds freshman Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) placed sixth in his first intercollegiate competition. Elkin made it to the semifinals before falling to No. 3 seed Darius Caldwell, who wrestled unattached . Elkins ended the day with two medical forfeits to finish 6th. No. 5 Kelly Anundson (Sparks, Nev.) went 5-1 on the day, finishing third in the 197 lbs. weight class. After breezing through the early competition recording two technical falls and a major decision, Anundson fell to Cayle Byers from George Mason, 5-3, in the semifinals. The redshirt senior recovered to win his final two matches and place third. No. 7 Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) claimed the final tournament championship for the Indians, going 5-0 on the day. Wainwright defeated No. 2 seed Trey Moss from Limestone, in the semifinals and No. 1 seed Aaron Brown from The Citadel, to claim the championship. ---------------------------- Anderson Trojans Drop Two Dual Matches 11/10/2007 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Anderson University wrestling team dropped two dual meets Saturday at the Tennessee-Chattanooga Duals. The Trojans lost to No. 8 Ohio State, 44-3; and to host No. 19 Tennessee-Chattanooga, 44-4. Anderson is now 1-4 in dual meets this season.
