June 28, 2016HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College has named Michael Baxter as its head wrestling coach, Dr. Lynn Griffin, vice president of athletics and athletic facilities, announced today. Baxter becomes the second coach in program history.
"We are very excited to have Michael join the Coker family," said Griffin. "He brings a wealth of experience, passion and a proven record of success to Coker. We look forward to watching Michael build on the academic and athletic success that our wrestling program has earned over the last three years."
Baxter comes to Coker after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Mercyhurst University. During the 2016 season, Baxter helped guide the Lakers to an 11-4 record, including going 6-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. Nine wrestlers earned All-American status, with 125-pound Willie Bohince finishing second at the NCAA Division II National Championship. Off the mat, Mercyhurst had nine wrestlers named National Wrestling Coaches Assocaition (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans and as a team the Lakers had the second highest grade-point average in the nation, with a 3.350 team GPA. There were also two wrestlers, Bohince and Augusta Mizia, named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District at-large team.
"I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead and coach at Coker College," Baxter said. "I want to thank Dr. Wyatt and Dr. Griffin for giving the me the chance to take the helm of the Coker wrestling team. Coker has done a fantastic job of building a program that is competitive athletically, as well as academically. I am confident with the group of student-athletes we have here, along with the vision of our leadership and administration, that Coker wrestling will continue to improve and compete at the highest level on and off the mat."
Baxter, a native of Sandusky, Ohio, wrestled for the Lakers for two seasons before injuries derailed his athletic career. Over his two seasons, he compiled a 41-23 record, including a stellar 29-14 mark as a freshman.
The 29 victories he recorded as a freshman are tied for fifth in program history by a rookie. He also led the Lakers with ten victories by fall as a freshman, which is also tied for fifth in program history in a single season. He missed qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Championship by one place after finishing fifth at the NCAA Super Region 1 Tournament.
After having his wrestling career cut short due to injuries, Baxter stayed on with the program as a student assistant coach during his junior and senior seasons. Over his two seasons on the Laker bench, Mercyhurst has posted a 28-9 record in duals, including a program-best 15-3 mark in 2012-13. The Lakers also won the first-ever Division II PSAC Championship in 2013-14.
Baxter wrestled at Perkins High School in Sandusky, earning third- and seventh-place finishes at the State Championships during his career.
A 2013 graduate of Mercyhurst with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine, he also earned a master's degree in exercise science from Mercyhurst in 2014.
He assumes command of a Cobra wrestling team that has produced three national qualifiers, seven NWCA Scholar All-Americans and the program's first-ever All-American in 2016, Austin Akins, in just three seasons.

Wainwright named head wrestling coach at Newberry CollegeNEWBERRY — Newberry College Athletic Hall of Fame member Cy Wainwright has been named the Wolves’ head wrestling coach. Wainwright will start his duties at Newberry on June 1.
Wainwright is the second head coach in the program’s 12-year history. R.C. LaHaye will stay with the Wolves’ wrestling program as associate head coach after serving as interim head coach for the last two months.
“We had a fantastic candidate pool with plenty of quality coaches in our search for this position and I am pleased Cy Wainwright has come back to Newberry College as our head wrestling coach,” Matthew Finely, director of athletics, said in making the announcement. “The future is bright and it is an exciting day for our wrestling program to have not only an alumnus, but a former national champion and athletic hall of famer come back and lead our program.”
Wainwright has been the head wrestling coach at Coker College for the last three seasons and was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Wrestling League Coach of the Year for the 2015-16 season. He coached the Cobras’ first-ever All-American in 2016.
“I’m very excited to come back to Newberry College,” Wainwright said. “I owe a lot to the Newberry community for making me who I am today. I picked up a good work ethic from my time here and the community of Newberry had a lot to do with that. I carried it over into my daily life and professional career.
“When I was on campus for my interview, I felt the same feeling that helped me establish the foundation I still carry today. It’s good to know that student-athletes can still develop in all facets of their lives here. I am excited to come back here and be a part of that.”
Wainwright is the only undefeated national champion in Newberry College history, and his dominant run in his three years in a scarlet and gray singlet will be tough to approach. The Green Cove Spring, Fla., native went an impressive 36-0 in the 2008-09 season with 14 pins, winning the heavyweight national championship just minutes after Keeno Griffin. The three-time national qualifier also earned All-American honors in 2008 with a third place finish.
At the time of his graduation in 2009, Wainwright was the school’s all-time wins leader with 128 victories, all-time falls leader with 33 and all-time major decisions leader with 17.
Following his graduation from Newberry, Wainwright entered the collegiate coaching ranks. He earned his master’s degree at St. Cloud State and was named the first head coach at Benedictine (Kan.) before starting the program at Coker.
The 2015-16 season was a big year for the Coker wrestling program, as the team became part of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and finished second in the conference in its first season of affiliation. Wainwright led the Cobras to a 14-3 overall record with a 4-2 ECAC mark. Five Cobras were named to All-Academic teams and the Cobras finished with a 3.149 team grade point average, 18th-best among Division II wrestling teams nationally. Wainwright was also named ECAC Coach of the Year, with five wrestlers earning All-ECAC honors.
During his second season at the helm of the Cobras, Wainwright led the team to a 14-5 record in dual matches, appeared in the Top 5 in the Super Region II polls for three weeks, was twice ranked in the national polls and won the Coker College Coach of the Year award. In his first year leading the Cobras, Wainwright led the team to a record of 10-7 in dual matches in the program’s first season of competition.
Wainwright has coached 20 NCAA Division II national qualifiers, 11 All-Americans, two national finalists and one NCAA Division II National Champion. He has also coached two top 10 NCAA teams and a national runner-up team in 2011.
Finley also praised LaHaye for stepping in while a new coach was hired.
“Coach Wainwright has decided to retain coach LaHaye as our associate head wrestling coach and I’m confident these two highly qualified coaches will make a great team for our student-athletes and can really build something special with their combined experience and leadership,” Finley said.

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- Coker wrestling racked up the postseason honors in its first season as a member of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Bench boss Cy Wainwright was tabbed Coach of the Year, while Austin Akins, Charlie Huff, Derrick Nelson, Jamal Lackey and Derrick Booth earned All-Conference honors.
Wainwright in his third season at Coker led the Cobras to a 14-3 record in dual matches and a 4-2 mark in the ECAC, good for a second place finish. Five wrestlers were picked to All-Academic teams, and the team earned a 3.149 grade point average. Wainwright also coached Coker's first wrestling All-American in Akins.
At 285 pounds, Akins was the lone Cobra selected to the All-ECAC first team. Akins was the headline at the end of the season, earning a trip to nationals and finishing fourth to become Coker's first-ever wrestling All-American. The senior went 25-13 with three wins by fall in his final campaign. The South Chesterfield, Va. native is the son of Wendy and Bret Akins and is a double major in exercise science and biology.
Huff was selected to the All-ECAC second team at 125 pounds. Huff went 32-10 in his final campaign for the navy and gold. He picked up four wins by fall and seven by major decision. At 125 pounds, Huff earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Midwest Super Regional Tournament where he finished fifth. The Sewell, N.J. native is the son of Chuck and Shelley Huff and is an education major.
Nelson earned a spot on the All-ECAC second team at 133 pounds. Nelson led the team in points, scoring 126 team points in his 29 wins this season. He earned 11 wins by fall and six by technical fall. He was also a member of the NCAA Division II All-Academic first team. The Spraggs, Pa. native is the son of Heidi and Dave Nelson. Nelson earned his undergraduate degree in history and is pursuing his Masters of Science in Collegiate Athletic Administration.
Lackey was voted to the All-ECAC second team at 165 pounds. Lackey won 12 matches on the year for the Cobras, nine of them coming by fall. The junior earned a trip to the NCAA Midwest Super Regional Tournament in 2015. The Lexington, S.C. native is the son of Aronna Winston and is an exercise science major.

Veronica Carlson Girls Wrestling Clinic at Rhino Wrestling Club- February 21stVeronica Carlson, one of our country's top female wrestlers, will be at Rhino Wrestling Club on Sunday, February 21st. The clinic will be broken into two sessions. Veronica was a 2013 USA World Team Member, a 2014 USA National Team Member, placed third in the 2015 US Open, and is currently training to make the 2016 USA Olympic Team. We are excited to have her at Rhino for this clinic, and also joining us to develop and be a part of our upcoming Rhino Girls program.
Clinic sessions will run from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm.

December 1, 2015HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker wrestling team jumped up one spot to No. 7 in
the Super Region Two rankings on Monday (Nov. 30), released by d2wrestle.com
Lake Erie College holds the top spot in the rankings, followed by Findlay,
Newberry, Tiffin, Wisconsin Parkside and University of Indianapolis respectively.
The Cobras also have five men ranked within their weight classes. Senior
Charlie Huff is ranked fifth at 125 pounds, while fellow senior Derrick Nelson
is ranked third at 133. Freshman Jordon Tague holds third place at 149, and
sophomore Luis Peguero currently sits at fourth place at 184 pounds. Senior
Austin Akins rounds out the Coker men cracking sixth place at 285 pounds.

November 22, 2015BRISTOL, TENN.- Nine Coker wrestlers placed in their respective weight
classes at the King Open on Sunday (Nov. 22). All who placed were within
the top four of each weight class.
Senior Charlie Huff placed second at 125 pounds, posting a 3-1 mark for
the day. Huff won his matches by fall, decision and major decision
respectively before losing in overtime 5-3 in the finals. Fellow senior
Derrick Nelson placed third at 133 pounds, going 5-1 on the day.
Two of his wins came by fall, one by tech fall and one sudden victory.
Junior RaSean McArthur placed third in the 141 pound weight class,
posting a 3-1 record for the day. In winning third, he defeated fellow
Cobra Curtis Harris on tiebreakers 7-6. Harris, a sophomore, went 4-2
on the day and picked up one win by major decision and one by fall.
Freshman Jordan Tague placed third at 149, posting a 4-1 mark and picking

Senior Zach Dicus placed fourth at 165, going 3-2 and winning his first
two matches by fall. At 174, senior Derrick Booth placed second, going 2-1.
He won his first by fall and fell in the championship match by decision 6-4.
At heavyweight, senior Austin Akins placed second, posting a 3-1 mark on the
day. Akins won his first bout by fall and fell only in the championship match
by decision 4-1.

The Coker wrestling team made its 2015-16 debut at the Pembroke Classic on
Saturday (Nov. 7).
The Cobras had six wrestlers place within their weight classes including
Derrick Nelson winning at 133 pounds and Jordan Tague at 149 pounds. The
senior posted a 4-0 mark on the day including two wins by fall. Senior
Charlie Huff (125 pounds) finished fifth, earning a 5-2 mark on the day.
Tague won his weight class via upset beating returning All-American and
No. 4 Scott Bosak of Belmont Abbey.
Rashad Cunningham placed third at 149, going 4-1 with one win by technical
fall. Derrick Booth finished in second at 174 pounds losing 7-3 in the finals
in his only defeat of the day. Austin Akins recorded a fourth place finish
going 4-2 in the 285 pound weight class.

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The 2015-16 Coker wrestling team will open its season on
Saturday (Nov. 7) at UNC Pembroke in the Pembroke Classic.
Coker will wrestle alongside Newberry, Limestone and several other area
schools. The Cobras have had some recent success at this event, with eleven
wrestlers placing in their weight classes at the 2014 tournament. Seven of
those wrestlers will return to the event this year, including Derek Rothermel
(3rd), Luis Peguero (3rd), Rashad Cunningham (4th), Derrick Booth (4th),
Zach Dicus (4th), RaSean McArthur (5th) and Varlee Kelleh (6th).
